Education in Kenya is changing. Today's learners are growing up in a world shaped by technology, innovation, entrepreneurship and rapidly changing careers. Success is no longer measured only by examination grades. It also depends on creativity, critical thinking, communication, collaboration and the ability to solve real-world problems.
The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) was introduced to prepare learners for this new reality. Instead of focusing mainly on memorising facts, CBC encourages learners to understand concepts, apply knowledge, develop practical skills and discover their individual strengths and talents.
This guide has been written to help learners, parents and teachers understand how the curriculum works and how informed decisions can be made as learners prepare for Senior School.
For many years, Kenya used the 8-4-4 education system. It produced many successful graduates and professionals, but it also faced important challenges.
Many learners concentrated on passing examinations rather than developing practical competencies. Learners with talents in sports, music, arts, technology or technical fields often had limited opportunities to pursue these strengths within the formal education system.
CBC seeks to address these challenges by recognising that every learner is different. It provides opportunities for learners to develop knowledge, practical skills, values and talents while preparing them for further education, training and future careers.
The goal is not simply to produce examination candidates, but capable, responsible and adaptable citizens.
