Grade 9 Is Ending. What Happens Next?

Grade 9 is ending. Around you, adults are using words like KJSEA, pathway, subject combination and Senior School. It can sound as if everybody understands what happens next except the person who actually has to live with the decision.

Start here: you are not choosing your entire life at fourteen or fifteen. You are choosing a direction for the next stage of learning, and that decision should use more than one exam score.

Do not begin with the most impressive career name

Begin with evidence about yourself. Which subjects make you curious enough to keep going when they become difficult? What kinds of tasks do you enjoy? What have teachers noticed? What do you practise without being pushed? What careers or problems in the world keep pulling your attention?

Pathways are directions, not cages

Senior School is organised around pathways and subject choices. The useful question is not which pathway sounds prestigious. It is which combination gives your strengths and interests somewhere serious to grow.

Have the conversation before the deadline

Talk with a teacher who knows your work. Talk with your parent or guardian. Look at actual subjects, not rumours about them. Investigate what different careers require. If you are torn between two directions, write down what attracts you to each and what evidence supports that attraction.
